Night & Day. Location: St Georges Dock Ventilation Station Liverpool, Merseyside, England. Designer: Herbert J. Rowse 1925-1934, Rebuilt 1951-1952 Sculptor: Edmund C Thompson The statues of Day and Night can be found near the base of the George’s Dock Ventilation and Central Station of the Mersey Road Tunnel. This ventilation tower is one of six in total for the Queens Way tunnel. The tower was designed by Sir Basil Mott (Main architect) and John A. Brodie (Liverpool City Engineer) with Herbert J. Rowse as architect. The tower which forms part of the Liverpool skyline and part of the world heritage site was badly damaged during the war, and had to be largely rebuilt by Rowse in 1951-52. The two statues are made of Basalt and were sculpted by Edmund C Thompson.

Another Place by the Turner winning artist Antony Gormley can be found on the beach at Crosby, to the north of the dock in Liverpool. It consists of 100 life-size cast-iron figures spread over 3km of the Crosby beach. Each figure is staring out over the Irish Sea and as the tides ebb and flow, the iron men as they have become known as locally are revealed and submerged by the sea. The figures are cast replicas of the artist’s own body, and have been seen in Germany, Norway and Belgium, before settling in Crosby permanently.

It has been sometime since I last updated my public view able work or posted to this Blog. The main reason for this is that I am taking a prolonged sabbatical from motorsport photography to concentrate on other work and projects. One of the reasons I have chosen to take this sabbatical form UK motorsport is because it is just no longer financially viable. The reason for this is because there are just too many photographers out there who are prepared to just give their work away for free or in exchange for a letter to enable them to apply for a media accreditation.

I don’t want to sound bitter about this, because frankly it’s just not worth it. I have taken this as an opportunity to push my photography into new areas and I can now say with honesty, I am now enjoying my work. There is also the additional bonus, that, I now and have more weekends’ free to concentrate on personal projects some of which will be published here. The decision to take a prolonged sabbatical does not mean that I have totally give up on motorsport photography, I have not. I hope to be seen again working at race meeting but this will be very selected UK meetings and some international meetings which will be mainly overseas, and I expect once again to be working with some of my old and well established clients.
